SUMMARY:Cascadia Film Series: Chasing Coral
DESCRIPTION:Image credit: The Ocean Agency – XL Catlin Seaview Survey – Richard Vevers\, Christophe Bailhache \nYou’re invited to our free\, virtual screening of Chasing Coral\, hosted by the Seattle and Olympia Chapters of the Surfrider Foundation. \nThis Sundance award-winning film follows a team of divers\, photographers\, and scientists on a thrilling adventure to capture why warming ocean water is causing coral reefs to vanish at an unprecedented rate. \nFind out what’s happening below the waves. Solutions for preventing further warming of our ocean lie right here in Washington. \nAfter the screening\, we’ll have a 30 min Q&A session with coral reef experts! \nWhitney Hoot is the Coral Reef Resilience Coordinator for the Bureau of Statistics and Plans on the island of Guam\, an unincorporated territory of the US. Her work includes coordinating the Guam Coral Reef Initiative and the Guam Reef Restoration and Intervention Partnership\, managing federal grants that fund coral reef conservation efforts\, and setting management priorities for the Guam Coral Reef Initiative. She is also a PhD student at the University of Alaska\, Fairbanks; her doctoral research focuses on developing best practices for coral outplanting in the Pacific. \nDr. Meredith Everett is a deep-sea ecologist for NOAA’s Northwest Fisheries Science Center. She is an expert in genetics and taxonomy and has surveyed seafloor species all along the Pacific Coast using modern techniques like environmental DNA (eDNA) to study the deep-sea corals. \nRegister for the event on our Eventbrite page.
