Our Team

Meet the Executive Committee

The Executive Committee is a small team of dedicated volunteers who meet monthly to discuss the Olympia Chapter’s goals, plan projects and events, and enjoy the coastal areas we love!

We are always looking for passionate volunteers to help us protect our coasts!

If you are interested in learning more about the EC or becoming part of our team, email us at OlySurfrider@gmail.com. Current vacant positions include Treasurer and Volunteer Coordinator. For more information, check out our Join Us page to learn more about the available EC positions.

Joe Wood
Chair

As a longtime northwest native and an avid skier and surfer, Joe saw volunteering at Surfrider as a way to give back to the environment and help protect the health of Puget Sound.  Before moving to Olympia,  Joe was the chair of the Seattle Surfrider Chapter, and more recently, a member of the Portland chapter.  Joe lives in Olympia with his fiancé Jo and their dogs, Jack and Bodhi.

Jill Williams
Vice Chair

Originally from Washington, Jill spent almost a decade on the East Coast before returning “home” to Olympia two summers ago. Mother of four awesome kids, she has been a member of Surfrider for over 10 years and dedicates her life to spreading awareness about protecting our waters, especially through the elimination of single-use plastics. As a journalism major from Eastern Washington University, Jill’s professional career is in graphic design, branding, and social media marketing. Some of Jill’s favorite things: biking, coffee, surfing, indie films, Reggae, Wim Hof and IPAs.

Leia Althauser
Secretary

Leia grew up in Phoenix Arizona, but spent summers spent rolling down Oregon coast dunes and gently wading around tidepools. She’s spent almost a decade living in, loving, and learning about Pacific Northwest coastal ecosystems. Leia is excited to be acting as the Secretary for the Olympia Surfrider Chapter where she can help foster appreciation and understanding for coastal ecosystems in her new community. In her free time, she enjoys hiking, cycling, surfing, skiing and salsa dancing with her husband Andrew.

Christine Rayburn
Ocean Friendly Restaurants Coordinator
Rise Above Plastics Specialist
Instagram Queen

Christine has been a cornerstone of our chapter for over two years! She moved to Olympia in 1996 and was a teacher in the North Thurston Public Schools for over 17 years.  Now she volunteers at South Bay Elementary, teaching the 5th graders to be water quality community scientists as they monitor a local stream through the South Sound GREEN program.  She also visits classrooms of all ages, student environmental conferences, and community centers to teach about plastic pollution, ocean acidification, sea level rise, and endangered species.  Christine also does our Oly Surfrider Instagram so follow us @OlySurfrider!

Daryl Taylor
Treasurer

Daryl has lived in the Northwest all of his life. He enjoys the outdoors and wants to make sure his kids can enjoy the same recreation that he has been able to depend on the environment providing for him. His spare time is spent camping and traveling with his wife and 2 kids that are 6 and 8 years old. He likes to surf, kiteboard, snowboard, brew IPA’s, and contemplate how to keep our Pacific Northwest green.
